Goldilocks and the Three Bears


Once upon a time there were three Bears: a Little Wee Bear, a Middle-sized Bear, and a Great Big Bear, who lived together in a house of their own, in a wood. Each of them had their own bowls, chairs and beds. 
One day, after they cooked the porridge for breakfast, and poured it into their porridge-bowls, they walked out into the wood to cool the porridge so that they may not burn on their mouths. Then, a little girl called Goldilocks, who was not well-brought-up, opened the door and entered the bears house arbitrarily.
She saw the porridge on the table and she set about helping herself. First, she tried to eat the porridge of the Great Big Bear, but it was too hot for her. Also, the porridge of the Middle-sized Bear was too cold for her to eat it. Last, she found that the porridge of the Little Wee Bear was just right for her and she ate it all up.
After a meal, she was so tired that she wanted to sit down in a chair. Just like when she ate porridge, chairs of Middle-sized and Great Big Bears didn't suit for her, but she could comfortably sat down in the chair of the Little Wee Bear.

When she fell fast asleep on the bed of the Little Wee Bear, three bears came home to breakfast and they noticed somebody had eaten their porridge. They started to search in case it was a thief. Goldilocks is upstairs now and three bears are on first floor. What in the world will become of her?

  • wee:ちっぽけな　　porridge:ポリッジ
  • errand:使い　　peep:こっそりのぞく
  • latch:掛け金　　hospitable:温かく迎える
  • impudent:厚かましい　　every bit:全部
  • plump:ドシンと座る　　cross:怒って
  • gruff:荒々しい　　sate:～を満たす
  • burglar:泥棒　　rumble:ゴロゴロ鳴る
  • shrill:甲高い　　tumble:転ぶ

    Be careful about translating の as "of".

    Each of them had their own bowels
    "Bowels" means 大腸!

The Fairy

 "You are so pretty, so good and courteous, that I cannot help giving you a gift."  Once upon a time there was a widow, who had two daughters. The elder was so disagreeable and so proud, and the younger was kind, polite, and one of the most beautiful girls. The mother disliked the younger and made her work continually. One day, when the younger had to draw water and was at the fountain, she met a poor woman, who asked her for drink. The younger was very kind and she willingly gave it to the poor woman.
